LG achieves BSI cyber security certification

October 2023

Announcement comes ahead of new UK legislation coming into force next year

Electronics business LG has been certified by BSI for going above and beyond with its cyber security practices, providing reassurance to consumers that they can trust LG’s smart devices as they bring them into their homes.

LG has become the first organization to achieve BSI’s cyber security certification for a smart TV product in partnership with SafeShark’s testing platform, reinforcing LG's proactive stance in complying with evolving cyber security regulations.

The certification comes ahead of the UK Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure Act 2022 (PSTI) coming into force in April 2024, which will introduce a raft of measures focused on device security to prevent the risk of cyber-attacks. These measures will enforce minimum cyber security requirements before connectable products are made available for sale in the UK, making the devices more secure and the end users less vulnerable to cyber-attacks.

Achieving BSI's Consumer Internet of Things (IoT) Certificate of Conformity not only signifies LG’s adherence to the minimum-security standards outlined in the PSTI, but also underscores the business’ dedication to upholding cyber security best practices that go beyond legal mandates.

The partnership between SafeShark and BSI, is designed to establish a rigorous testing and certification process that assures connected products and devices are equipped with best practice cyber security controls, offering consumers and shareholders trust that IoT devices will be to cyber attacks less vulnerable in accordance with best practice.

LG quote: “We are pleased to be demonstrating the high quality of LG’s solution and its commitment to cyber security best practice. LG's product development and leading innovation platform seeks to ensure that all its technological advancements are future-ready and have consumer safety and security as a core priority. The SafeShark and BSI certification is a critical step to ensure we are prepared for future UK legislation.”

Carlos Perez, Global Digital & Connected Product Certification Director at BSI said “Cyber security is key to realizing the benefits of connected devices and smart technology, from smart phones, watches and TVs to appliances such as smart doorbells and thermostats. We congratulate LG for demonstrating their ongoing dedication to progressing cyber security excellence.

SafeShark Director Alex Buchan said "LG was the first global manufacturer to act as soon as the legislation was announced, engaging SafeShark’s continuous testing and BSI certification to demonstrate its commitment to best practice and consumer security long before the law mandated it. Now, having undergone re-certification, LG is yet again demonstrating the highest level of compliance ahead of the April deadline next year. This proactive approach leads the way for other manufacturers of connected devices, all of whom will need to act in the coming months to do the same. I would urge all manufacturers not to leave this until it is too late.”

SafeShark uses an advanced automated testing platform known as Intercept. , this platform continues to monitor products throughout their entire lifecycle, providing confidence in ongoing compliance even as firmware updates are released and cyber threats evolve.

The development of this certification scheme was made possible through funding from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) and close collaboration with the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC). Products undergoing testing are rigorously evaluated against the cyber security standard for Consumer IoT devices (ETSI EN 303 645). This standard serves as the foundation for both the UK PSTI and forthcoming European legislation.
